What was the MH17 class action about?
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17) was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine. All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed.
The MH17 class action lawsuit was launched in 2016 with the aim of providing the family members of those who had perished in the MH17 crash with compensation for their trauma, pain and suffering due to the loss of their loved ones.

Group members in the class action were family members of a number of Australian citizen or resident passengers who were killed on board flight MH 17 on 17 July 2014.
What was the MH17 class action outcome?
Following complex litigation, settlement was reached in respect to the Federal Court MH17 class action.
The settlement was subject to the approval of the Federal Court. The settlement was approved by Judge Perram on 26 June 2019.
However, the Dutch led Joint Investigation Team (“JIT”) criminal investigation into the shooting down of MH17 is ongoing.
On 19 June 2019 the JIT publicly identified four alleged perpetrators in respect to the downing of MH17. The four persons have been charged and international arrest warrants have been issued. The trial of the alleged perpetrators will commence in the Hague in March 2020. If necessary, the trial will proceed in the absence of the alleged perpetrators.
